The exhibit consists of sixteen graphic panels that tell the story of California's experience of the Civil War, from earliest settlement up to the Union victory in 1865.
These panels provide the narrative spine of the exhibit. Hosting institutions may fill out the show with artifacts or supplemental items.
In the Folsom show, displays were created by numerous organizations, including the Folsom History Museum, the Sons of Union Volunteers, Daughters of the Golden West, and various private collectors.
California and the Civil War presents the story of California's experience of the convulsive upheaval that almost destroyed the United States.
American California and the Fate of the Nisenan was produced in cooperation with the Nisenan Nevada City Rancheria. It describes the catastrophic impact of California Gold Rush on the Nisenan and other tribes that lived in areas overrun by miners.
